Meta Tag Generator
Build title, description, canonical, robots, Open Graph and Twitter Card tags with a live search and social preview.
How to use the Meta Tag Generator
- Enter the page title and meta description. The counters show how your text compares with the lengths search results usually display.
- Add the canonical URL, set robots directives if needed, then fill in Open Graph and Twitter/X card details for social sharing.
- Check the search result and social card previews, which update as you type.
- Copy the generated HTML, or download it, and paste it into the <head> of your page.
Good to know
- Character counts are guidance, not rules: roughly 30–60 characters for titles and 70–160 for descriptions. Search engines measure display width in pixels and may rewrite titles and snippets.
- Canonical, og:url and og:image values must be absolute http(s) URLs. Invalid fields are reported and left out of the output so the HTML never contains them.
- All values are HTML-escaped (& < > " '), and line breaks inside values are collapsed to single spaces.
- The preview never loads your og:image URL, so your browser does not contact the address you typed. Social platforms fetch the image themselves when the page is shared.
- A robots meta tag with “index, follow” is the default behaviour; it is included so the setting is explicit and easy to change.
Examples
- Search-friendly basics
- Title: “Free Online Tools for Developers | Example Co”. Description: one or two sentences describing the page. Canonical: https://example.com/tools.
- Keeping a page out of search
- Set Indexing to noindex to emit: <meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow">. Combine with nofollow only if you also do not want links followed.
- Escaping
- A title like Tom & Jerry's "Best" Tips is output as Tom & Jerry's "Best" Tips so it cannot break the markup.
Frequently asked questions
Does a meta description improve rankings?
Search engines do not use it as a direct ranking signal, but it often becomes the snippet people read, so a clear description can improve how many people click.
What is the difference between a canonical URL and og:url?
The canonical URL tells search engines which address is the preferred version of the page. og:url tells social platforms which address to attribute shares to. They are normally the same, which is why og:url defaults to the canonical.
Do I need Twitter card tags if I have Open Graph tags?
Twitter/X falls back to Open Graph for title, description and image, but the twitter:card tag selects the card layout, so add it if you want the large-image style.
