How to use the Image Compressor

  1. Drag a PNG, JPEG or WebP image onto the drop area, or press “Choose image”.
  2. Pick an output format. “Same” keeps the original format; JPEG and WebP usually give the smallest files for photos.
  3. Move the quality slider. The result preview and file size update a moment after you stop moving it.
  4. Compare the original and result sizes. If the result is smaller, press Download. If it is not, keep your original file.

Good to know

  • JPEG and WebP output is lossy compression: fine detail is permanently discarded to save space. PNG output is encoded without loss and has no quality setting.
  • Compression happens in your browser using the canvas. The image is never uploaded, and nothing is stored once you close the page.
  • Limits: 25 MB per file, 16,384 pixels on the longest side and 50 megapixels in total. Larger images are refused with a message instead of risking a frozen tab.
  • Photos taken in portrait are shown and exported the right way up. EXIF metadata such as camera model and GPS location is not copied to the exported file.
  • Animated images are exported as a single still frame.
  • WebP export depends on your browser. If it cannot encode WebP, the tool reports that rather than quietly giving you a different format.

Examples

A 4 MB phone photo for a web page
JPEG at quality 75–80 typically cuts a photo to a fraction of its size with little visible change. Exact savings depend on the image, and the tool shows the real figure before you download.
A transparent PNG logo converted to JPEG
JPEG cannot store transparency. The tool fills transparent areas with the background colour you choose (white by default) and tells you it has done so. Keep PNG or WebP if you need the transparency.
An already-optimised PNG
Re-encoding a PNG in the browser is lossless but not always smaller. When the result is the same size or larger, the tool says so and offers your original file back instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is the compression lossless?

No, not for JPEG and WebP. Those formats trade a small amount of detail for a smaller file, and lowering the quality discards more. PNG output is lossless, but it has no quality control and often does not get smaller.

Why did my file get bigger?

Re-encoding an image that was already well optimised, or converting a small JPEG to PNG, can increase its size. The result panel shows the change honestly as a negative reduction and lets you download the original unchanged.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and re-encoded by your browser on your device. You can confirm in your browser's network panel that no image data is sent.

Why is the image rejected as unreadable?

The tool checks that the browser can really decode the file, not just its extension. A renamed text file, a corrupted download or an unsupported format will be refused with an explanation.
